Visit the neighbourhood

Accessible, modern, and bold, NUVO Quartier was created from the visionary minds of brothers Robert and Howard Wiseman, owners of Galeries de la Canardière and several other shopping centres across Canada under the Econo-Malls banner. With their partner with Groupe A7 Immobilier, they transformed the large parking lot of Galeries de la Canardière to stimulate the revitalization of the D’Estimauville neighbourhood.

Led by the MixDev consortium, which combines the expertise of Econo-Malls and Groupe A7 Immobilier, NUVO Quartier is shaping the future of one of the best-located neighbourhoods in Québec City. Whether it’s for a short commute to work, shopping, or leisure, discover the many advantages of choosing the D’Estimauville eco-district!

History

When history paves the way for the future

The beginning
Rich in history, the Galeries de la Canardière was the first shopping mall to open in Québec City in the late 1950s. This $1.5 million project, launched in 1957 following a zoning change in the parish of Saint-Pascal-Baylon, saw much of its structure rise by May 1960. The design, inspired by the open and functional architecture typical in the United States, marked a new era in the city’s retail landscape.
Canardière Cinema
At the heart of the mall, the Canardière Cinema was one of Québec's largest and most modern theaters, with a seating capacity of 700. For just $0.25, you could watch films like Astérix le Gaulois or comedy classics with Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin, while parents enjoyed a peaceful shopping experience. Those nostalgic for the past also recall the excitement surrounding the opening of the covered walkway in 1971, with stars such as Lucien Hétu, Johnny Farago, and Patrick Zabé gracing the event.
Place NUVO
Today, the Galeries de la Canardière—now known as Place NUVO—remains a landmark in the D’Estimauville neighbourhood. The completely renovated shopping centre spans approximately 138,000 square feet and will house around 30 stores, including three long-standing businesses: Bijouterie Suisse, Salon Royal, and St-Pascal bowling alley. This rich history of authenticity, proximity, and loyalty sets the stage for the creation of NUVO Quartier, an exceptional new development built on the parking lot of the former Galeries de la Canardière.
